SUMMARY:Season of Easter
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nWe celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The most important moment in the Christian calendar\, and the first liturgical celebration enacted. The Christian calendar radiates from this centre\, and every Sunday from the Resurrection onwards is celebrated as a “Little Easter”. Easter Sunday concludes the three-day long liturgy of the Easter Triduum. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe rejoice that Jesus has conquered death\, and reality has been irrevocably transformed into a post-resurrection reality. Life will never be the same again\, and we are now an Easter people who share in the new life Jesus gives. \nCALCULATING EASTER\nEaster is calculated with reference to the Hebrew Passover\, since that is when Jesus was crucified. The Passover itself is a moving date based on the lunar calendar; the date of Easter thus varies each year. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe greet one another with the acclamation “Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed\, alleluia!”. We keep an Easter Vigil the night before\, reflecting on God’s saving work in Christ. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy \nWe begin the day with a sunrise service \nBaptisms are often conducted \nHEBREW AND PAGAN SOURCES\nChristians often present new meanings to cultural practices\, Easter is a word that comes from the pagan spring festival Oestre. Pasch\, a term referring to both the Hebrew Passover festival (Pesach) and Passover lamb took on Christian nuances to refer to the Resurrection and the true Passover Lamb. \nREFERENCES \nLathrop\, Gordon. SUMMARY:Aldersgate SG 2025 Lecture: Growing Together in Holiness
DESCRIPTION:Aldersgate Celebration is a call to worship God together as a Methodist family. This year we will explore what it means to love God through scriptural holiness. Bishop Emeritus Dr Robert Solomon will share with us on The Priesthood of All Believers (Celebration Service) and on Growing Together in Holiness (Lecture). \nDate: Sat\, 23 May 2025\nTime: 7.30pm – 9pm\nLocation: Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church (TA2)\, 61 Wishart Rd\, Singapore 098716\nSpeaker: Bishop Emeritus Dr Robert Solomon \nWhat did John Wesley mean when he wrote\, “There is no holiness but social holiness”? \nHis point was that it was in Christian community that individual Christians can best grow in holiness. The lecture will explore the connections between church membership\, discipline\, and discipleship in the Wesleyan concept of church. It will also examine how Wesleyan small groups (classes\, bands\, and select societies) are meant to enhance accountability and deepen growth in holiness. We are at our best when we learn to grow together in holiness\, and there is a need to find ways of doing this well. \nThere is no livestreaming for both the lecture and the Celebration Service; these are on-site only events and we’ll strongly encourage you to attend both sessions. \nNo registration is required. \nVisit the Aldersgate website for more info \n
