SUMMARY:Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nAn “epiphany” refers to a revelation\, and the season marks the shift in emphasis from the birth of Jesus to the revelation of his ministry to the world. Epiphany brings together the three strands of Jesus’ birth (the adoration of the wise men)\, baptism (at the Jordan)\, and ministry(turning purification water into wine at the wedding at Cana). \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nEpiphany is about God making all things new. We celebrate that the Gospel is not just for Israel but all the world. We remember that as the new people of God we share in the one baptism of Jesus. We rejoice that God is doing a new work through fulfilling the old covenant. \nWHY THE WISE MEN (MAGI)?\nThe wise men represent the world coming to worship at the feet of Jesus. Scripture is silent as to their actual number\, but the three gifts gave rise to the tradition that they were three. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nTraditionally\, the Sunday following Epiphany Day celebrates the baptism of Jesus. Readings in the weeks after Epiphany emphasise the ministry of Jesus\, including the wedding at Cana. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy. \nSome churches conduct baptisms or renew their baptismal vows \nTHE FIRST CHRISTMAS\nEpiphany was observed even before Christmas! For Early Christians Jesus’ birth was not as important as his death\, and Easter served asthe primary celebration of the Church. Epiphany was a summary of the beginning of the Gospel story. It was only later\, amidst debates on the divinity and humanity of Jesus\, that Christmas began to be celebrated. \nREFERENCES \n\nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:Watchnight Covenant Renewal
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nNot part of the Christian liturgical calendar but a Methodist distinctive. Essentially a vigil\, it is a service usually held on New Year’s Eve\, crossing into the new year. This gave rise to its more popular name – a “Watchnight” Service. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nJohn Wesley found the service to be an important means of spiritual renewal\, and conducted such services in the the Methodist societies he visited. \nCOVENANT RENEWAL\nCentral to the service is the Covenant Prayer\, where we are summoned to commit ourselves completely to God\, in every area of our lives. It is a serious covenant not meant to entered into without adequate preparation. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe gather to reflect\, and give thanks to God for the year that is past\, and renew our covenant\, rooted in our baptism\, for God to be our God and we to be his people. \nRed is used to as a symbol of the Holy Spirit\, consecrating us and setting us apart for God \nWe commit ourselves completely to God and his purposes. \nVIGILS AND CHRISTIAN WORSHIP\nVigils are worship services in which Christians watch and wait in the presence of God through the night into the new day. Its roots lie in the Jewish practice of passover. Early Christians gathered on the eve of Easter for the similar purpose of retelling the Gospel story which shapes our identity as Christians. This became known as the Great Easter Vigil\, inspiring other lesser vigils in Christian worship. \nREFERENCES \n\nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:Season of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nChristmas is one of the two key moments of the Christian calendar (the other being Easter). It is not Jesus’ birthday we celebrate but the significance of his birth: God himself has come to us in Jesus Christ. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe rejoice that God has bridged the chasm between humanity and himself. We remember the events and circumstances around Jesus’ birth (a “nativity”) – a mini Gospel anticipating the suffering\, death\, and\nresurrection of Jesus. \nTHE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS\nLike Easter\, Christmas is such a big part of the story of God that one day alone is not enough to celebrate – hence the twelve days. The length holds no significance other than to lead into Epiphany\, 6 January. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nServices take on a celebratory note. The night before Christmas is often a candlelight vigil. Midway through the season\, on New Year’s Eve\, Methodists gather to renew our baptismal covenant with God. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy. \nThe Gospel is retold\, with an emphasis on the Nativity. \nChristmas carols are sung throughout the twelve days. \nCHRISTMAS AND PAGANISM\nChristians do not believe that 25 Dec is the actual date of Christ’s birth. Rather\, the date has origins in the pagan observance of the winter solstice. Christians have never been shy to shine the light of\nChrist on cultural practices\, revealing its true significance. Hence\, new meanings have been given to the solstice – there is indeed a renewal of life\, and this comes in the person of Jesus. \nREFERENCES \n\nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:Season of Advent
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\n“Advent” refers to a “coming”. As the start of the Christian calendar\, it is a time of expectation. We anticipate the Christmas celebration of the Incarnation of Jesus\, while looking forward to his second advent. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nEven though the work of the cross is complete\, all Creation (including ourselves) is still in the process of being perfected. We learn to groan with Creation amidst the pains of life\, looking to the day when Jesus will come again in final victory\, making all things new. \nTHE FOUR SUNDAYS OF ADVENT\nDifferent themes are assigned to each of the four Sundays: Christ Coming in Final Victory (1st Sunday)\, John the Baptist (2nd and 3rd Sundays) and the events preceding the birth of Jesus (4th Sunday). \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nAdvent is a time of preparing ourselves\, through reflecting on how Israel anticipated the coming of the Messiah. We practise self-denial\, imitating the example of Jesus in his first Incarnation. \nPurple is used to signify repentance and royalty. Blue is sometimes used to signify hope. \nFour candles are lit over the four Sundays\, each representing Christ our Hope\, the Way\, our Joy\, and our Peace. \nCHRISTMAS CAROLS\nJust as we do not sing of resurrection on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday\, it is not usually appropriate to sing Christmas carols during Advent. It is about waiting with longing and anticipation\, rather than the joy of Jesus’ birth. This can be hard in modern culture\, with malls playing carols as early as November\, but it teaches us to wait in the imperfection where the world downplays it. Waiting amplifies our joy on Christmas and its twelve days\, when we finally sing these carols. \nREFERENCES \n\nThe United Methodist Book of Worship. SUMMARY:All Saints Day
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nA day of remembrance for those who died in the Lord. A celebration of how the Church Militant (those still alive) and the Church Triumphant (those who have died) are alive in Christ\, as one Communion of Saints. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe affirm our blessed hope that Christ has conquered death. Even death cannot separate us from his love\, and through Christ we remain connected with saints through time and space. \nWHO ARE THE SAINTS?\nWhile “saints” is sometimes used in the context of the heroes of the faith\, saints here refers to “all Christians in every time and place.” \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe never pray to the dead – prayers are always directed to God. We pray and thank God for those who have been called home to him\, seeking to emulate their godly examples. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy. \nNames of those who died in the past year are read aloud. \nWe thank God for the lives of those who have gone before us. \nEASTER AND HALLOWEEN\nMost cultures have a day of remembrance for the departed\, but Christians have two – Easter and All Saints. Both are rooted in the resurrection of Jesus. \nRoughly half a year from Easter\, All Saints often bears the character of being a “little Easter”. \nHalloween\, observed on 31 Oct\, has roots in All Saints Day. It was originally known as All Hallow’s Eve\, “hallow” meaning “holy one” or “saint”. \nREFERENCES\n \n\nAlexander\, J. Neil.
