SUMMARY:Heart2Heart Mothers' Fellowship - When You Pray (Session 1/7)
DESCRIPTION:Do you have trouble thinking of words to say to God when you pray? Are you afraid some emotions are too intense to express to God? Do you reach the end of a day only to realise you haven’t prayed at all? You’re not alone. Prayer is the way we relate to God\, but sometimes it’s a struggle. Throughout God’s Word\, we encounter many voices who teach us how to pray. \nIn this 7-session study\, join with six beloved Bible teachers who will help you study prayers in the Bible that can inspire your own. You’ll learn that God welcomes your praise and lament\, your thanksgiving and intercession. You’ll see examples of how to pray when you’re alone and when you’re gathered with others. Above all\, you’ll notice there’s no one right way to pray. As you draw near to God through prayer\, you’ll find your faith strengthened and your heart united to Christ. \nDates: Fridays\, 10 Jan – 28 Feb 2025\nTime: 9:30am – 11:30am\nVenue: BRMC Conference Room\, L1 \nAll moms\, young and old are welcome! \nThe Heart2Heart Mothers’ Fellowship meets every Friday during school term time. \nEvent and sign up details \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ordinary Time After Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nOrdinary Time refers to the time between the two cycles of Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost. They are marked as “After Epiphany” and “After Pentecost” respectively. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nOrdinary Time itself has no central theme\, but Scripture readings during After Epiphany emphasise the growth of the Kingdom of God through the life and ministry of Jesus – an extension to the Epiphany theme of “revealing” Jesus to the world. \nNOTHING ORDINARY ABOUT ORDINARY TIME\n“Ordinary” comes from the word “ordinal”\, referring to how the weeks are counted in order (e.g.\, 1st Sunday After Epiphany\, 2nd Sunday After Epiphany\, and so on). \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nThe season is punctuated by special holy days (the source of the word “holiday”) such as Transfiguration Sunday. Other days significant to the congregation\, such as ACS Sunday\, are also observed. \nGreen is used to signify growth and life. \nSermons tend to focus on Jesus’ call for us to follow him as disciples. \nBOOKENDING THE ORDINARY\nBoth blocks of ordinary time keep our focus on the life and ministry of Jesus. The early weeks of After Epiphany continue the trajectory of the three strands of the Epiphany of Jesus\, in particular his baptism\, and the wedding at Cana. The first Sunday of After Epiphany is thus observed as “The Sunday of the Baptism of our Lord”. The last Sunday of After Epiphany is observed as “Transfiguration Sunday”\, the final great revelation of Jesus to the world. \nREFERENCES \nSenn\, Frank C. Introduction to Christian Liturgy. SUMMARY:Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nAn “epiphany” refers to a revelation\, and the season marks the shift in emphasis from the birth of Jesus to the revelation of his ministry to the world. Epiphany brings together the three strands of Jesus’ birth (the adoration of the wise men)\, baptism (at the Jordan)\, and ministry(turning purification water into wine at the wedding at Cana). \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nEpiphany is about God making all things new. We celebrate that the Gospel is not just for Israel but all the world. We remember that as the new people of God we share in the one baptism of Jesus. We rejoice that God is doing a new work through fulfilling the old covenant. \nWHY THE WISE MEN (MAGI)?\nThe wise men represent the world coming to worship at the feet of Jesus. Scripture is silent as to their actual number\, but the three gifts gave rise to the tradition that they were three. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nTraditionally\, the Sunday following Epiphany Day celebrates the baptism of Jesus. Readings in the weeks after Epiphany emphasise the ministry of Jesus\, including the wedding at Cana. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy. \nSome churches conduct baptisms or renew their baptismal vows \nTHE FIRST CHRISTMAS\nEpiphany was observed even before Christmas! For Early Christians Jesus’ birth was not as important as his death\, and Easter served asthe primary celebration of the Church. Epiphany was a summary of the beginning of the Gospel story. It was only later\, amidst debates on the divinity and humanity of Jesus\, that Christmas began to be celebrated. \nREFERENCES \n\nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:Watchnight Covenant Renewal
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nNot part of the Christian liturgical calendar but a Methodist distinctive. Essentially a vigil\, it is a service usually held on New Year’s Eve\, crossing into the new year. This gave rise to its more popular name – a “Watchnight” Service. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nJohn Wesley found the service to be an important means of spiritual renewal\, and conducted such services in the the Methodist societies he visited. \nCOVENANT RENEWAL\nCentral to the service is the Covenant Prayer\, where we are summoned to commit ourselves completely to God\, in every area of our lives. It is a serious covenant not meant to entered into without adequate preparation. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe gather to reflect\, and give thanks to God for the year that is past\, and renew our covenant\, rooted in our baptism\, for God to be our God and we to be his people. \nRed is used to as a symbol of the Holy Spirit\, consecrating us and setting us apart for God \nWe commit ourselves completely to God and his purposes. \nVIGILS AND CHRISTIAN WORSHIP\nVigils are worship services in which Christians watch and wait in the presence of God through the night into the new day. Its roots lie in the Jewish practice of passover. Early Christians gathered on the eve of Easter for the similar purpose of retelling the Gospel story which shapes our identity as Christians. This became known as the Great Easter Vigil\, inspiring other lesser vigils in Christian worship. \nREFERENCES \nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:Season of Christmas
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nChristmas is one of the two key moments of the Christian calendar (the other being Easter). It is not Jesus’ birthday we celebrate but the significance of his birth: God himself has come to us in Jesus Christ. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe rejoice that God has bridged the chasm between humanity and himself. We remember the events and circumstances around Jesus’ birth (a “nativity”) – a mini Gospel anticipating the suffering\, death\, and\nresurrection of Jesus. \nTHE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS\nLike Easter\, Christmas is such a big part of the story of God that one day alone is not enough to celebrate – hence the twelve days. The length holds no significance other than to lead into Epiphany\, 6 January. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nServices take on a celebratory note. The night before Christmas is often a candlelight vigil. Midway through the season\, on New Year’s Eve\, Methodists gather to renew our baptismal covenant with God. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy. \nThe Gospel is retold\, with an emphasis on the Nativity. \nChristmas carols are sung throughout the twelve days. \nCHRISTMAS AND PAGANISM\nChristians do not believe that 25 Dec is the actual date of Christ’s birth. Rather\, the date has origins in the pagan observance of the winter solstice. Christians have never been shy to shine the light of\nChrist on cultural practices\, revealing its true significance. Hence\, new meanings have been given to the solstice – there is indeed a renewal of life\, and this comes in the person of Jesus. \nREFERENCES \nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:CONNECT - Seniors Singing Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thu\, 12 Dec 2024\nTime: 10am – 12noon\nVenue: Methodist Girls’ School (IGLC room) @ Blackmore Drive \nOn the second week of the month\, we call out to all seniors and their caregivers who love singing. \nAt the Singing Fellowship\, we share our reflections on our Christian life through the songs we nominate to sing together\, facilitated by a pastoral staff. \nSinging helps us explore and grow in faith both cognitively and affectively. The lyrics guide our thinking and the music inspires our souls. After singing\, we deepen our bonds of bonds of kinship\, friendship and discipleship over a shared meal together. \nPlease confirm your attendance with Chang Chong Tian at the church office at 6256 4298. \n\nThis event offers a chance to G.R.O.W. (Gracefully Ripen\, Overflowing with Wisdom from God) by connecting and engaging in activities with like-minded individuals.
