SUMMARY:Season of Lent
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nLent (from the Old German for “lengthen”) is a time of preparation for the celebration of Easter. In the Early Church\, new believers prepared for their baptism at Easter through an extended time of fasting and reflection\, imitating the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe repent of our sins as we meditate on the price Jesus paid for us and our salvation. In penitence we learn to deny ourselves through fasting\, that we may carry our cross and follow Jesus to Calvary. \nTHE CULMINATION AT HOLY WEEK\nThe climax of Lent is in its final week\, known as Holy Week\, when we journey with Jesus to the Cross and grave. Palm Sunday marks the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday is when we remember how the Passover Lamb calls us to serve one another. Good Friday is when we remember the death of Christ on the cross. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nLent begins with Ash Wednesday\, when a service is usually conducted\, and ash is imposed on our foreheads as a visible sign of repentance. Throughout Lent we meditate on the suffering and death of Christ. \nPurple is used to signify repentance and royalty. \nAsh is imposed on our foreheads as a sign of repentance \nWe practice self-denial through fasting. \nFASTING AND SELF-DENIAL\nFasting is traditionally a fast from food\, either a complete fast from eating within certain hours of the day\, or restricted to a simple diet such as bread and water. In recent times fasting can take the form of an abstinence from luxuries that our heart craves. All these forms seek to help us learn to deny ourselves and keep our eyes on Jesus. \nREFERENCES \nThe United Methodist Book of Worship. SUMMARY:Equip H2H Mothers' Fellowship - Is Healthy Gaming Ever Possible?

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nA commemoration of how Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem in triumph\, signalling the start of the week leading to his death and resurrection. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nPalm Sunday demonstrates that glory and suffering are sides of the same coin; we cannot have one without the other. We glorify Jesus as the true king\, and yet also see how the road to glory must pass through suffering. This is the same road he calls us to follow him on. \nTHE SUBVERSIVENESS OF PALM LEAVES\nPalm leaves were originally associated with the Feast of Booths (Leviticus 23:40) as a symbol of thanksgiving for God’s provision. 150 years before Jesus came\, it evolved into a subversive symbol when Jerusalem welcomed Judas Maccabaeus with palm branches after he liberated the city from their pagan overlords. We wave it in the same\nsubversive spirit\, recognising that Jesus brings a new Kingdom. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nPalm branches are waved as a re-enactment of the people responding to Jesus’ triumphant entry. We reflect on the contrast between the earthly and heavenly kingdoms. \nWhite is used to signify the blood of Christ. \nSome churches keep the branches until the next Ash Wednesday\, burning them to prepare the ash. \nBY ANOTHER NAME\nPalm Sunday is sometimes celebrated as “Passion Sunday”\, when the the sufferings of Jesus (known as the “passion”)\, and the events leading to the Crucifixion\, are recounted. This is often done in churches that do not observe Maundy Thursday or Good Friday with services. \nREFERENCES\n \n\nUnited Methodist Church. SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nMaundy Thursday is marked by a service in the evening\, which itself initiates the great three-day long liturgy (Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday) known as the Easter Triduum. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nMaundy Thursday gets its name from the Latin “mandatum”\, meaning “commandment”. We remember Jesus’ new commandment to love and serve one another\, a posture necessary for communion at his table. Fittingly\, Maundy Thursday also commemorates the institution of Holy Communion \nTHE WASHING OF FEET\nUnlike Holy Communion\, foot washing is not a sacrament since it is not an act commanded by Jesus. Rather\, we wash each other’s feet in imitation of what Jesus did at the Last Supper\, enacting humble servanthood as a response to the command to love one another. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe retell the Gospel accounts of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples\, and instituting the sacrament of Holy Communion. There is no benediction\, and the people depart in meditative silence\, since the liturgy continues the next day. \nPurple is used to signify repentance and royalty. \nFoot washing is sometimes re-enacted. \nWe celebrate Holy Communion \nTHE STRIPPING OF THE SANCTUARY\nAt the end of the service\, the altar cloth (on the communion table) and parament (hanging on the pulpit) is removed\, along with the altar cross\, altar Bible\, and other decorations. The Sanctuary remains bare to symbolise the desolation and abandonment of Jesus in Gethsemane and in the suffering that follows. \nREFERENCES \nFrank C. SUMMARY:Good Friday
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nWe remember the Crucifixion of Jesus. Worship across Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday form the Easter Triduum\, a three-day long liturgy marking in turn the suffering\, death\, and resurrection of Jesus. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe reflect on how God embraced suffering and death for us and for our salvation. We comes to terms with the total depravity of the human heart and the depth of love God has demonstrated in redeeming it. \nA PENSIVE CELEBRATION\nBecause it is part of a larger liturgy that climaxes with the joy of Easter\, Good Friday services are sombre and penitential in nature. Despite knowing that the victory is already won\, we linger in deeper reflection on how God’s generous grace that has saved us from our sin. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nNo vestments adorn the Sanctuary\, and the pastors are dressed simply with no stoles or pectoral crosses. The cross is partially veiled\, drawing attention to this holy mystery. A crown of thorns is hung on the cross as a visible reminder of the price Jesus paid. The liturgy continues through Saturday and Sunday\, and so the people depart in meditative silence with no benediction pronounced. \nNo liturgical colours are used\, because the Sanctuary is stripped \nA large standing wooden cross is used instead of the brass altar cross. \nRE-ENACTING THE CRUCIFIXION\nChristians re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus in many ways. Most commonly the Crucifixion is read and preached from the Gospels. The Tre Ore is a worship service based on the seven last words of Jesus on the cross. The Stations of the Cross is a devotional tool that guides us in walking with Jesus to the cross. \nREFERENCES \nJ. SUMMARY:Season of Easter
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nWe celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The most important moment in the Christian calendar\, and the first liturgical celebration enacted. The Christian calendar radiates from this centre\, and every Sunday from the Resurrection onwards is celebrated as a “Little Easter”. Easter Sunday concludes the three-day long liturgy of the Easter Triduum. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe rejoice that Jesus has conquered death\, and reality has been irrevocably transformed into a post-resurrection reality. Life will never be the same again\, and we are now an Easter people who share in the new life Jesus gives. \nCALCULATING EASTER\nEaster is calculated with reference to the Hebrew Passover\, since that is when Jesus was crucified. The Passover itself is a moving date based on the lunar calendar; the date of Easter thus varies each year. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe greet one another with the acclamation “Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed\, alleluia!”. We keep an Easter Vigil the night before\, reflecting on God’s saving work in Christ. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy \nWe begin the day with a sunrise service \nBaptisms are often conducted \nHEBREW AND PAGAN SOURCES\nChristians often present new meanings to cultural practices\, Easter is a word that comes from the pagan spring festival Oestre. Pasch\, a term referring to both the Hebrew Passover festival (Pesach) and Passover lamb took on Christian nuances to refer to the Resurrection and the true Passover Lamb. \nREFERENCES \nLathrop\, Gordon.
