SUMMARY:Season of Easter
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nWe celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The most important moment in the Christian calendar\, and the first liturgical celebration enacted. The Christian calendar radiates from this centre\, and every Sunday from the Resurrection onwards is celebrated as a “Little Easter”. Easter Sunday concludes the three-day long liturgy of the Easter Triduum. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe rejoice that Jesus has conquered death\, and reality has been irrevocably transformed into a post-resurrection reality. Life will never be the same again\, and we are now an Easter people who share in the new life Jesus gives. \nCALCULATING EASTER\nEaster is calculated with reference to the Hebrew Passover\, since that is when Jesus was crucified. The Passover itself is a moving date based on the lunar calendar; the date of Easter thus varies each year. \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe greet one another with the acclamation “Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed\, alleluia!”. We keep an Easter Vigil the night before\, reflecting on God’s saving work in Christ. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy \nWe begin the day with a sunrise service \nBaptisms are often conducted \nHEBREW AND PAGAN SOURCES\nChristians often present new meanings to cultural practices\, Easter is a word that comes from the pagan spring festival Oestre. Pasch\, a term referring to both the Hebrew Passover festival (Pesach) and Passover lamb took on Christian nuances to refer to the Resurrection and the true Passover Lamb. \nREFERENCES \nLathrop\, Gordon. SUMMARY:Day of Pentecost
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nA celebration of when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples\, fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Pentecost” stems from a Greek term meaning “fiftieth day”. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe give thanks to God for the gift of the Holy Spirit\, enabling us to share in and continue the work of Jesus in the world. Without the Holy Spirit\, we would never have the grace our strength to pursue holiness in our life and in the world. \nTHE DOVE AND TONGUES OF FIRE\nThe dove and the tongues of fire are two common symbols of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was baptised\, the Holy Spirit descended upon him “like a dove” (Mt 3:16; Mk 1:10; Lk 3:22; Jn 1:32). At the Upper Room\, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disicples like “tongues of fire” (Ac 2:3). \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nBaptisms and Confirmations are sacramental acts in which the Holy Spirit is invoked upon the candidate – Pentecost is thus an appropriate time for baptisms\, and confirmations in particular. \nRed is used to signify the fire of the Holy Spirit and the blood of the martyrs in the Early Church \nConfirmations are often conducted \nTHE BIRTH OF THE CHURCH\nThe Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 is records the “birth” of the Church\, in the sense that it marks the start of the ministry of the Church. It marks the reversal of the confusion of languages at Babel in Gen 11\, because while different languages remain\, we are united now to proclaim God’s praise to the ends of the earth. \nREFERENCES \nTruscott\, Jeffrey A. SUMMARY:Ordinary Time after Pentecost
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nOrdinary Time refers to the time between the two cycles of Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost. They are marked as “After Epiphany” and “After Pentecost” respectively. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nOrdinary Time itself has no central theme\, but Scripture readings during After Pentecost often emphasise the Kingdom of God and the reign of Jesus\, through the work of his body\, the Church. We learn that the ministry of Jesus to the world continues through us\, and we minister out of the blessed hope we have of his glorious return. \nNOTHING ORDINARY ABOUT ORDINARY TIME\n“Ordinary” comes from the word “ordinal”\, referring to how the weeks are counted in order (e.g.\, 1st Sunday After Pentecost\, 2nd Sunday After Pentecost\, and so on). \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWorship during this time generally adopts themes more related to the sermon series than the season itself. The season is punctuated by special holy days\, the source of the word “holiday”. \nGreen is used to signify growth and life. \nSpecial Days are observed\, including TRAC Conference Sunday. \nBOOKENDING THE ORDINARY\nThe first Sunday of After Pentecost is Trinity Sunday\, focusing on the doctrine of the Holy Trinity\, a crucial underlying statement of faith for all Christians. The last Sunday of After Pentecost is Christ the King Sunday\, focusing on how Christ reigns over all Creation as King\, and that this king will one day come back in glory – leading us back into the Advent anticipation. \nREFERENCES \nSenn\, Frank C.
