SUMMARY:Ordinary Time after Pentecost
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nOrdinary Time refers to the time between the two cycles of Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost. They are marked as “After Epiphany” and “After Pentecost” respectively. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nOrdinary Time itself has no central theme\, but Scripture readings during After Pentecost often emphasise the Kingdom of God and the reign of Jesus\, through the work of his body\, the Church. We learn that the ministry of Jesus to the world continues through us\, and we minister out of the blessed hope we have of his glorious return. \nNOTHING ORDINARY ABOUT ORDINARY TIME\n“Ordinary” comes from the word “ordinal”\, referring to how the weeks are counted in order (e.g.\, 1st Sunday After Pentecost\, 2nd Sunday After Pentecost\, and so on). \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWorship during this time generally adopts themes more related to the sermon series than the season itself. The season is punctuated by special holy days\, the source of the word “holiday”. \nGreen is used to signify growth and life. \nSpecial Days are observed\, including TRAC Conference Sunday. \nBOOKENDING THE ORDINARY\nThe first Sunday of After Pentecost is Trinity Sunday\, focusing on the doctrine of the Holy Trinity\, a crucial underlying statement of faith for all Christians. The last Sunday of After Pentecost is Christ the King Sunday\, focusing on how Christ reigns over all Creation as King\, and that this king will one day come back in glory – leading us back into the Advent anticipation. \nREFERENCES \nSenn\, Frank C. SUMMARY:All Saints Day
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\nA day of remembrance for those who died in the Lord. A celebration of how the Church Militant (those still alive) and the Church Triumphant (those who have died) are alive in Christ\, as one Communion of Saints. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nWe affirm our blessed hope that Christ has conquered death. Even death cannot separate us from his love\, and through Christ we remain connected with saints through time and space. \nWHO ARE THE SAINTS?\nWhile “saints” is sometimes used in the context of the heroes of the faith\, saints here refers to “all Christians in every time and place.” \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nWe never pray to the dead – prayers are always directed to God. We pray and thank God for those who have been called home to him\, seeking to emulate their godly examples. \nWhite is used as a symbol of joy. \nNames of those who died in the past year are read aloud. \nWe thank God for the lives of those who have gone before us. \nEASTER AND HALLOWEEN\nMost cultures have a day of remembrance for the departed\, but Christians have two – Easter and All Saints. Both are rooted in the resurrection of Jesus. \nRoughly half a year from Easter\, All Saints often bears the character of being a “little Easter”. \nHalloween\, observed on 31 Oct\, has roots in All Saints Day. It was originally known as All Hallow’s Eve\, “hallow” meaning “holy one” or “saint”. \nREFERENCES\n \n\nAlexander\, J. Neil. SUMMARY:KAIROS
DESCRIPTION:Come gather\, pray and worship as one church family at our monthly corporate prayer session. \nAll are welcome. \n  \nAre any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them\, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick\, and the Lord will raise them up\, and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another\, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. \n– James 5:13-16 (NRSV)

SUMMARY:Season of Advent
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS IT?\n“Advent” refers to a “coming”. As the start of the Christian calendar\, it is a time of expectation. We anticipate the Christmas celebration of the Incarnation of Jesus\, while looking forward to his second advent. \nWHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?\nEven though the work of the cross is complete\, all Creation (including ourselves) is still in the process of being perfected. We learn to groan with Creation amidst the pains of life\, looking to the day when Jesus will come again in final victory\, making all things new. \nTHE FOUR SUNDAYS OF ADVENT\nDifferent themes are assigned to each of the four Sundays: Christ Coming in Final Victory (1st Sunday)\, John the Baptist (2nd and 3rd Sundays) and the events preceding the birth of Jesus (4th Sunday). \nWHAT DO WE DO?\nAdvent is a time of preparing ourselves\, through reflecting on how Israel anticipated the coming of the Messiah. We practise self-denial\, imitating the example of Jesus in his first Incarnation. \nPurple is used to signify repentance and royalty. Blue is sometimes used to signify hope. \nFour candles are lit over the four Sundays\, each representing Christ our Hope\, the Way\, our Joy\, and our Peace. \nCHRISTMAS CAROLS\nJust as we do not sing of resurrection on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday\, it is not usually appropriate to sing Christmas carols during Advent. It is about waiting with longing and anticipation\, rather than the joy of Jesus’ birth. This can be hard in modern culture\, with malls playing carols as early as November\, but it teaches us to wait in the imperfection where the world downplays it. Waiting amplifies our joy on Christmas and its twelve days\, when we finally sing these carols. \nREFERENCES \nThe United Methodist Book of Worship.
