We congratulate BRMC member Quek Hwee Choo for being awarded the Empowering Warmth Award at the MWS Empowering Life Awards 2026, in recognition of her faithful service with Methodist Welfare Services.
After retiring, Hwee Choo simply made herself available to serve. Through a friend, she was connected to Eunos Senior Care Centre, where a first exploratory visit became a meaningful beginning. Together with her guitar teacher, Gerald Ong, she started singing for seniors in what she describes as their “debut”. Since April 2023, they have been returning twice a month.
Through songs in English, Malay, and dialects — often specially learned upon request — they bring joy, connection, and moments of reminiscence. Seniors smile, sing along, clap, and sometimes ask them to stay longer or return soon. These simple interactions have been deeply encouraging.
While she hopes their sessions uplift the seniors, Hwee Choo reflects that the blessing flows both ways.
“We think we bless them — actually, we are tremendously blessed by their love, warmth, trust and friendship.”
Beyond giving her time, she also gives financially. Having experienced the joy of serving, she hopes others can share in that same blessing. “It takes very little to make a difference,” she says. “If everyone contributes a little, it all adds up.”
Visit Methodist Welfare Services and help bring warmth, care, and connection to those in need.
