After retiring from a banking career, Barker Road Methodist Church member Quek Hwee Choo has simply made herself available to serve.

In recognition of her service with Methodist Welfare Services (MWS), she was awarded the MWS Empowering Warmth Award in January, together with her guitar teacher, Gerald Ong.

Both volunteer bi-monthly, bringing live music and joy to seniors at Eunos Senior Care Centre with guitar and song across English, Malay, and dialects. Going the extra mile to learn requested tunes, they foster engagement, reminiscence, and comfort, creating a vibrant, inclusive lunchtime atmosphere that uplifts spirits and strengthens client connections.

While she hopes their sessions uplift the seniors, Hwee Choo says she’s been much blessed in return.

“We think we bless them — actually, we are tremendously blessed by their love, warmth, trust and friendship.”

Hwee Choo, who serves as a Connect Group Ministry Committee member at BRMC, also volunteers with her CG at the monthly Shalom Dementia Care Fellowship.

Campaigning Change

Beyond giving her time, she’s also a regular donor of MWS. Having experienced the joy of serving, she hopes others can share in that same blessing. “It takes very little to make a difference,” she says. “If everyone contributes a little, it all adds up.”

Visit Methodist Welfare Services and help bring warmth, care, and connection to those in need.
